Pilot Study
Pilot Study Already Producing Water of the Same or Higher Quality than Drinking Water Currently Delivered to Rockland County Residents
The pilot study is a scaled down engineering test facility used to collect water quality and other data. Located in West Haverstraw, the pilot began operations in 2010 and will help United Water’s engineers and scientists determine the most effective ways to purify Hudson River water and optimize energy and chemical use.
Water produced at the pilot is used for testing purposes only, and the study is conducted in conjunction with the New York State Departments of Health and Environmental Conservation. The results will be used to aid the design of a full-sized treatment plant capable of producing up to 7.5 million gallons a day of purified drinking water.
A state-of-the-art purification process is already producing water at the pilot that meets or surpasses all federal and state safe drinking water standards and the results are in!
In addition to testing for all constituents required by government safe drinking water standards, United Water has tested for specific radionuclides, including tritium, strontium, cesium and iodine. After several months of testing at the pilot, United Water has detected limited levels of these substances in the river water, below all safe drinking water standards. There are no detectable levels of these substances in the water that has been treated through the purification process.
